Inter-Cultural Society has come out with a proposal before the government of India to work on the 4,200 years-old history of Meghalaya that, according to some scientists, will throw light on a new chapter of world history.
This shows how our scientists who are working on world history do not know the history behind the name ‘Megha-laya’ ; as always understood by a lay man, ‘megha’ stands for the ‘cloud’. But this is not the real meaning. Meghas were a warring class of Kalinga, who invaded Ceylon and brought back many valuables from that country; this statement also does not speak much of their participation in world history. Their name appears in the history of Roman civilization, and also with Homer’s epics.
They represent as ascendant of Rishi Megha who opposed Alexander; they were not only warriors but also were ancient priest-class people whose name appears in all world religions. Magians, Magis, Amazon tribes, and Moghas are its different name-forms.
Their participation in Sri Jagannath culture has been versified, and perhaps, ICS is not aware of this. Present Meghalaya shows one aspect of the internal migration from the ‘first-land’ of human civilization after the Great Flood.
