What is remarkable in Togo is the landscape of the Mud Towers called Takienta, the home of the Bata-mmariba at Kouta-mmakou which extends up to neighbouring Benin region. This particular landscape has created a belief-system for itself which is unique to trace its history beyond times.
The system which Unesco thinks to have created a living-space for man and its surrounding within a defined cultural background of its people is far from truth. This type of mud-dwelling refers to Nile river basin of the ancient world. It is a cultural symbol and its name ‘Takienta’ identifies their ancient faith in ‘mmakou’, same as ‘mokshya’, and Hebrew ‘msh’, the name that marks ‘Mokkaswar’ or the God of ‘Salvation’ referring to the ‘Bata-Tree’, or the ‘Bo-Tree’, same as the Tree of Wisdom. The house stands as a symbolic place for providing salvation. Bata-mmariba identifies the location of this ‘Tree’ at Moriah, not at all different from Bata-Mangala(Place of First Sermon of the Buddha) region; it may identify Koti-tirtha’ means sacred place of ‘Koti’. This is the birthplace of Chemosh or Kartikeya(whose mother was Kritika), the Assyrian(Seir) God of Creation, the neighbouring place of Moab. Takienta refers to the sacred rock of Takka. Even the house is made of mud, it stands like the ‘Rock of Takka’.
Kouta also identifies a fisherman’s community who were anciently known as the Skythians. They were also followers of Kumar or Chemosh or Kartikeya, son of Kritika(marks the name of Abraham’s second wife). The society of Tammari again refers to its ancient root in ‘Tammar’, ‘name of a forest Tamala’, ‘name of a place’ and ‘name of a port’; it identifies ancient Tamraparni, also name of a flower called ‘tamala’. As the human race originated from a particular geographical base, human memory shares certain facts of life that cannot isolate him from his deified relation with the land of his ancestors.
But the name seems to be identical with Karatiya, a Yaksha, who helped the monks at time of their need; it was name of a settlement where the ancient Troy then stood. Kharatiya was enjoying the status of a lower god;
It is still more interesting to see that the Somba mud houses stand like ‘chaityas’ or like ‘stupas’ , the symbol of Buddhism; it also marks the worshipping site of relics of ancestors. Tradition of ancient people always lived with the memory of their ancestors.
Name Togo refers to the ancient Tagar, a great city of ancient times; the name is linked to the residence of Tagara Sikhi, an Arhant or a liberated monk who seems to have been responsible for the origin of ancient Sikhism.
Ditammari has its root in Datta Mari or Datta Ammari; both the names identify two royal houses: Dattha which refers to ancient Rome and birthplace of Rama, and Ammari and Mari refer to Mauryan royal house and its daughter Amma means ‘Mother’ and ‘Mari’ means ‘Mary’ or the Mauryan Daughter; the geographical components involved in the description of the region put the people of Togo migrated from the Negev region of the ancient world. When one reads the people as being called as ‘Serpent Children’, it is still more wonderful; the Serpents means ‘Nagas’ which identifies the Negev region of the Bible to which ancient Kapilavastu as well as the royal house of Ajodhya belonged. It was neighbourly to Troy of Homer’s epics.
The Tammasri people are called Batammariba as well as Somba who speak the language of Oti-Volta. They again belonged to the Atakora Department of Benin where neighbours know them as Taberma; their houses are called Tata-Somba.
Somba—refers to Indian God Sambhu means ‘Mahadeva’ ; but the name stands for Buddha(Sammasambudhaso; somba originated from sambuddhaso)) also. Because name Somba sees prefix Tata means ‘Tatha-gata’ which always refers to Buddha. Thus Somba houses soulfully remember their God Tathagata and his stupas where relics is worshipped. A great tradition, of course; Gur-speaking areas meant areas of Great Teacher where Gur means ‘Teacher’s Residence’; it clarifies the ancestral ways of the people who either were followers of Tagara Sikhi(followers of the Buddha), or they are his descendents. After getting displaced by the Great Flood, these descent community lives with the memory which the Flood has unable to wash away.
Oti-Volta River basin refers to Volta means ‘Vortu’ or the river basin of the Euphrates. It identifies the Bagha or the Tigris river belt on which the ancient Kapilavastu then stood.
Atakora confirms the region of the migrants; Atakora is a combination of two names: Ata means Athaka(as same as Ithica of Iiad, and home town of Ulysses); and Kora refers to Kuru sitting neighbourly to Athaka region on the bank of the river Bhartu or Volta.
Benin means Bhagini or Bhauni as same as ‘Sister’ or ‘Virgin’; it is related directly to Taberma means ‘Taber-Ma’ or Mother’ at Mt Taber(Mountain at the middle of the earth).
The first settler, according to Batammariba, was Babietiba means ‘Baibarta’ of Indian puranic tradition. A purana also is named after this name; the name describes a region, a people, and a god. This is how the memory of ancient migrants of the Negev means ‘south’ region reaching Togo has survived in a cultural landscape of its people.
The Oti- Volta people has been subdivided by scholars into Buli-Koma (or Buli-Konni), Gurma, and Yom-Nawdm; the Gurma has been again subdivided into Ngangam, Gourmanchema, Moba(Bimoba), Ntcham(Akaselem) and Nateni;
And this division speaks loudly the region from which people of Togo migrated from. The scholarly world should warmly respond and recognise this voice.
